Manchester United fans flocked to Twitter in their droves to celebrate the news that David de Gea is expected to sign a new deal.

The Mirror have claimed the Spain international will become the world’s highest-paid goalkeeper when he pens a new five-year contract worth a mammoth £375,000-a-week, which equates to being worth £97.5million.

It is thought a compromise may have been reached, as it was believed he wanted to be in the same wage bracket as Alexis Sanchez’s £500,000-a-week. But, after extensive talks, it would appear the two parties have come to an agreement.

De Gea is expected to pen terms just in time for the upcoming Premier League campaign and once they return from their pre-season tours of Australia and the Far East.

Like Manchester United, the 28-year-old did not have the best of years between the sticks as he was guilty of making a number of costly errors. As Opta Joe detailed on their Twitter account following the Chelsea defeat in April, the Spaniard had made three gaffes leading to goals in his previous four matches – the same number he made in his previous 123 appearances.

According to Transfermarkt in his 47 matches across all competitions, he conceded 63 goals (54 of those in the Premier League) and kept just ten clean sheets. That was an extremely poor total when in the previous year he kept 22 clean sheets and conceded just 35 goals in his 46 outings (Transfermarkt).

However, fans appear to have put all that behind them as they took to Twitter to share their delight at hearing the news that de Gea is on the verge of agreeing to a new deal.

Here are just some of their reactions…
