With the consistently formidable Cristiano Ronaldo taking up the right-flank, constantly hogging the spotlight with his dazzling displays in a United shirt, his fellow countryman on the opposite side of midfield – Nani – was frequently overlooked during his time at Old Trafford.
To draw comparisons between the two Portuguese wingers, both slender in build and extremely fond of a step-over (or five) was deemed only natural. They had both come from Sporting CP and both demonstrated the exact same style of flair-heavy play, week in, week out.
Ronaldo obviously did it to a much higher, more consistent degree but Nani, with FourFourTwo highlighting his flair, was an effective player, too. 40 goals and 73 assists in 230 appearances for the Red Devils made him somewhat of a cult hero at Old Trafford.
The four-time Premier League title winner may never be hailed as one of the ‘true greats’ to ever don the United jersey – there have simply been too many – but his contribution to the cause will surely forever be appreciated on the red side of Manchester.
Now plying his trade in the MLS with Orlando City, the 32-year-old scored an absolute beauty last week. Here’s how supporters of his former club reacted to it on Twitter…
