Manchester United made hard work of beating League One Rochdale in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night, narrowly edging past Brian Barry-Murphy’s men on penalties.
17-year-old Mason Greenwood led the line for the hosts in the absence of the injured Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, and opened the scoring for the hosts with 22 minutes left on the clock.
It was the teenager’s second goal in as many appearances for the Red Devils, after he scored the only goal of the game against Astana in the Europa League last Thursday.
There are clear signs of progression for Greenwood at Old Trafford, which have seen him near a new five-year deal worth an astonishing £25,000 a week. And, despite a poor overall performance from United against League One opposition, the fact that the teenage frontman continues to impress when given a chance in the first team is a positive sign of things to come.
