Manchester United: Fans want club to re-call Chris Smalling from loan after Maguire injury

Following a report from the MEN which hinted Manchester United could be looking to loan a defender following Harry Maguire’s hip injury, some Red Devils supporters have highlighted a potentially better option in re-calling Chris Smalling from his season-long loan at AS Roma.

Maguire, who looks set to be out of action for an ‘extended period’ with the knock, has been a major figure in the club’s defence this season, so missing his services could be seen as a major blow, given the extent of his involvement this term.

While the piece details the fact United could look to the January window in search of answers, some fans have pointed out that Smalling is currently having a great season in Serie A – amassing an 89.6% pass success rate whilst winning on average 4.4 aerial duels per game.

The Englishman’s prowess in the air particularly overshadows that of United’s current preferred centre-back pairing of Victor Lindelof and Phil Jones – with both players averaging just 2.8 and 2.0 respectively in the league.

As a result, some United fans are keen to see a potential Smalling return to Old Trafford – here’s what they had to say on Twitter.
