Speaking to Manchester United’s official website in his first interview with the club, loan striker Odion Ighalo has revealed that he took a pay cut to sign for the Red Devils on the last day of the January transfer window – resulting in many United supporters singing his praises.
Ighalo, who signed on loan from Shanghai Shenhua in a last minute deadline day deal, apparently told his agent to make the move happen, irrespective of the cost to his personal salary. The Nigerian was signed as a temporary replacement for the injured Marcus Rashford, ideally allowing manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to play a natural striker and move Anthony Martial back into the wide positions.
Compared to Rashford, during his best Premier League season at Watford in 2015/2016, Ighalo failed to match the Englishman’s current statistics of 3.4 shots and two completed dribbles per game, as per WhoScored.com. However, the 30-year-old was able to match a similar goal return of 15 in 36 starts – with United supporters hoping he can replicate that form.
