Manchester United interested in shock move for “excellent” midfielder who was relegated last season

Manchester United endured a disastrous 2024/25 season—finishing 15th in the Premier League, their worst campaign since 1973–74.

Sacking Erik ten Hag in October, the club appointed Ruben Amorim, hoping he could resuscitate a floundering Old Trafford side. But even with the managerial switch, United limped to a lowly finish and exited both domestic and European competitions without silverware.

In response to the chaos, United badly need reinforcements: a new striker to up the goal threat, a goalkeeper to replace Andre Onana, midfield steel following Christian Eriksen’s departure, and a new wide man to step in the shoes of the seemingly outbound Alejandro Garnacho.

But almost a month into the summer window, signings have been limited to only the return of Jadon Sancho from Chelsea—who is potentially offloading to Fenerbahçe. It’s a skeleton start to what should be a full rebuild.

With finances under strain—partly from Old Trafford’s redevelopment and the mismanagement of the club’s finances under the Glazer family—United need bargains.

That’s led them to Wilfred Ndidi, Leicester City’s relegated midfield powerhouse.

According to talkSPORT, United have reignited their interest in Foxes midfielder, with the Nigerian now available for a bargain price following the Foxes’ relegation from the Premier League.

United were previously linked with Ndidi, described by Leicester boss Ruud van Nistelrooy as “excellent,” last summer when he was a free agent, but ultimately missed out after he signed a new three-year deal with Leicester, fresh off helping them secure the Championship title.

Crucially, that contract included a £9 million release clause—activated only if the club were relegated again.

Now that Leicester have dropped straight back down to the second tier, United are exploring the opportunity to bring in the 28-year-old midfield enforcer at a cut-price. With financial constraints limiting their spending power this summer, Ndidi represents a cost-effective solution to United’s midfield woes.

While Everton are also in the mix, and Saudi Pro League clubs are reportedly monitoring the situation, United’s need for a reliable, experienced ball-winner—especially after losing Christian Eriksen and with Casemiro’s role uncertain—makes Ndidi an increasingly attractive target, albeit not a blockbuster one.
