Leicester City News

Having gatecrashed into the Premier League elite in recent years – as well as so famously topping it in 2015/16 – there’s so much to trawl through when it comes to getting your daily dose of the latest Leicester City news.

So, as the stakes get raised even higher at the King Power, the Football Transfer Tavern have you covered. Whether it be transfer-related or injury updates, keep on top of everything about the Foxes here.

Leicester City History

Founded in 1884 by a group of public school students and members from a local church congregation, it is fair to say Leicester was almost entirely unrecognisable from the club we are all familiar with today. In fact, the original name was Leicester Fosse FC.

The Foxes moved to Filbert Street, before joining the Football League for the first time in 1894, and finally changed their name to Leicester City in 1919.

After a takeover by Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, Nigel Pearson guided City to the top of the Championship, gaining promotion to the English top tier after a lengthy ten-year absence in 2014.

How many trophies have Leicester City won?

Boosted by the bank balance of the Thai businessman and the guile of Claudio Ranieri, Leicester won the Premier League in 2016 in what is widely considered to be one of the biggest shocks in sporting history.

Prior to this, the Foxes’ highest finish was an honourable second place at the end of the 1929 season in the First Division, and it is highly unlikely football fans around the world will ever forget about this famous victory.

The East Midlands club have also won the League Cup three times, last picking up the trophy under former boss Martin O’Neill at the turn of the century.

Leicester City Facts

After Filbert Street was considered too small, the board decided to relocate only a short distance away from their long-term home. Club legend Gary Lineker officially opened the brand-new Walkers Stadium in 2002. The snack food company bought the naming rights on a ten-year-deal. These were subsequently sold to King Power International Group ahead of the 2011/2012 season.

Who are Leicester City’s rivals?

Most Foxes regard Nottingham Forest as their main rivals, with Derby County close behind.

Famous Leicester City players

Whilst Leicester is well known for unearthing attacking talents like Lineker, Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy, we should probably give a mention to a pair of popular shot-stoppers.

Two of England’s greatest goalkeepers of all time both made over 350 appearances for the Foxes. Gordon Banks and Peter Shilton spent a combined total of 16 years between the sticks at the Midlands.
