David de Gea had an absolute nightmare for Watford’s first goal of the day on Sunday. He fumbled the ball between his hands to allow Ismaila Sarr his second goal of the season, and many Manchester United fans are now convinced it’s time to drop him and give second-choice Sergio Romero a chance between the sticks.
De Gea has started every match in the Premier League since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer managed United for the first time exactly one year ago. However, he’s seen his form decline over the last three seasons and that’s signified by his average rating on WhoScored of 6.42/10 so far this season, 6.52/10 last term and 7.27/10 for the 2017/18 season.
Romero has played in four Europa League games and three Carabao Cup fixtures so far this term, and WhoScored rated his performances at an average of 6.91/10 for both competitions. When De Gea’s mistake happened, many United fans took to Twitter to express how they think it’s time he was dropped and Romero got his chance in goal.
You can see some of the tweets by United fans below:
If i was Ole, i would drop De Gea for Romero in the next game. It may wake De Gea up. Nobody should be undroppable! #bbcfootball

Time for De Gea to be dropped. Cost us 2 points last week. Probably 3 today. Get Romero in the sticks. Can’t be any worse than De Gea at the moment. #MUFC
