A number of Manchester United fans were swift to heap praise on Fred as the midfielder produced an “exceptional” display in helping the Red Devils secure an impressive 2-1 win against Paris Saint-Germain.
United came into their first Champions League group stage game after a year’s absence from the tournament needing to a result to kickstart their campaign. However, trave;ling to last season’s runners up always looked like a daunting prospect, but the Red Devils produced an excellent performance to clinch all three points.
Fred performed brilliantly at the base of midfield alongside Scott McTominay, with Ole Gunnar Solksjaer seeking more defensive stability in his midfield than had been on show in their other matches. The 27-year-old was certainly able to provide that for most of the night in Paris.
The midfielder has at times been criticised for his ability to protect the back four, but against PSG he managed to make an impressive five tackles, two interceptions and won nine out of his 16 duels, as per Sofascore. That enabled him to break up much of the hosts’ momentum and soak up a lot of pressure.
Many Manchester United fans were quick to point out just how “superb” he was to helping them secure the win after the game, while one even compared him with former Old Trafford midfield icon Paul Scholes.
United fans react to Fred’s strong performance against PSG
He’s been superb, great legs all game. He’s surely played himself back in, and we look much better with a combative and mobile midfield

Brilliant. I questioned him over VDB but I guess that’s why I don’t manage #mufc. Spot on tactically from Ole

Prime Scholes. He’s been hard on De Maria.
