Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has asked Ed Woodward to complete a deal for Harry Maguire as soon as he can, according to Sky Sports.
It is said that the Norwegian is keen to add the England centre-back to his squad; however, Leicester City are said to want £80m for the 26-year-old.
Woodward has been in England during the club’s tour of Australia and the Far East in the hope of completing some more signings.
However, Manchester United aren’t the only club interested in Maguire though, as Manchester City look to compete with their city neighbours for the centre-half’s signature, with The Telegraph reporting on their interest.
Manchester United have been linked with Maguire as far back as last summer, where the club refused to sign the player despite the pleads of former manager Jose Mourinho. Links have continued this summer, and after the club’s defensive record last season, you can see why they would want to sign the centre-back.
Last season, Manchester United broke an unwanted record, conceding more goals in the Premier League than they ever have, a total of 54. This was the highest of any of the teams in the top six of the Premier League and highlighted a key weakness in Solskjaer’s squad.
It seems Manchester United have identified a fix for the weakness, as they target Maguire once again. However, their attempts to sign the Leicester City man are weak and feeble and leave a lot to be desired.
Whatever happens, Manchester United’s transfer window has been frustrating so far, having only made two signings. It shows that the club needs urgent recruitment to help identify and sign targets much quicker than they have this summer.
