Manchester United: Red Devils still tracking Diogo Costa

Lusail Stadium, Lusail, Qatar - December 6, 2022. Portugal's Diogo Costa celebrates.

Manchester United have been linked with a summer move for Porto and Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa, with the club regularly watching him in action.

The Lowdown: Costa key for club and country

The 23-year-old may still be a young player, particularly in his position, but he has already become an important figure for club and country of late.

Costa started five matches for Portugal at the 2022 World Cup, while for Porto, he has appeared in seven Champions League matches so far this season.

Now, it looks as though United are eyeing up the Portuguese as a potential summer addition, having been linked with him before.

The Latest: United eyeing up move

According to O Jogo [via Sport Witness], United have been a ‘habitual presence’ at Porto games of late, as they watch Costa in action.

There is nothing stated regarding a bid being made for the young ‘keeper, however, but it does seem clear that the Red Devils see him as a possible future signing.

The Verdict: Long-term De Gea replacement?

Costa could be the ideal man to eventually come in and replace David De Gea, with the Spaniard enjoying a good season but turning 33 later in the year, not to mention being out of contract this summer.

Cristiano Ronaldo of Manchester United

MUFC fans, do you remember what year Cristiano Ronaldo signed the first time?

The Porto man is arguably a better all-round fit, too, in terms of his distribution and general ability on the ball, allowing United to be even more competent playing out from the back.

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig has hailed Costa as ‘magnificent’ in the recent past and he could be the next signing that helps take Erik ten Hag’s side to the next level.

That’s not to say that De Gea would be instantly replaced but a gradual changing of the guard could make perfect sense, as United build for the future as well as the present.
