Many Manchester United fans have reacted to the news academy prospect Dillon Hoogewerf has signed his first professional contract with the club.
Since moving to the Leigh Sports Village from the Ajax academy last summer, the Dutch youngster has featured in 13 games in the U18 Premier League this season, scoring 3 goals and providing 1 assist (Transfermarkt).
Hoogewerf can play on either side or through the middle and more than makes up for his short stature with an eye for the goal. The 17-year-old made 21 appearances for the Sons of the Gods’ U17 team, bagging 10 goals and creating 6 assists.
Although he is a long way off earning a place in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first team, the Netherlands U17 international has impressed the backroom staff in recent months, as he has played a key part in the Red Devils’ FA Youth Cup run. Hoogewerf has scored three goals in three games and notably netted the winner against Leeds United to seal a spot in the semi-finals.
Popular fan site UtdReport shared his Instagram post via Twitter.
Understandably, some supporters were left puzzled by the latest announcement, as at the moment it seems unlikely the young forward will supplant the likes of academy graduates Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood in the long term. One United fan commented “that’s not Sancho” while another added Hoogewerf will become “Mason’s backup.”
Take a look at some of the puzzled replies down below…
