Chelsea fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern are looking slightly unimpressed as digest the latest news from Metro.
The publication seem to think Manchester United could well be set to pip them to the post when it comes to landing Southampton’s Luke Shaw.
The left back is one of the hottest properties around and is certainly on the wishlist of both Jose Mourinho and David Moyes.
Our landlord reminds us that it was only a week or so ago that we thought the player was on his way to Chelsea after confessing his desire to join the club to his closest friends, but as our punters note, it is never a done deal until everything is signed, sealed and presented.
Now Shaw looks like he will become the second Manchester United signing of the January transfer window, with the club closing in on a £20 million deal for the England Under-21 full back.
This is of course after landing Juan Mata for a massive £37 million – ironically from Chelsea.
Mourinho is keen to bring in another left back, with Shaw’s idol Ashley Cole well and truly down the pecking order now and a right back currently occupying the position.
Either way, Shaw will not come cheap, and £20 million will be the least the clubs will have to pay.
