Manchester United are preparing for another important summer rebuild after sealing their return to the Champions League.
With European football back at Old Trafford, the club are expected to strengthen across several areas of the squad in order to compete domestically and in Europe next season.
Midfield is likely to be one of the main priorities, especially with Casemiro expected to leave following what has arguably been his strongest campaign in a United shirt.
As a result, attention has increasingly turned towards younger long-term options — and one of the names highest on the shortlist appears to be West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes.
Fernandes Drops Huge Man Utd Hint
The 21-year-old Portuguese star, previously described as “fantastic” by Nuno Espírito Santo, has been heavily linked with Manchester United in recent months after impressing despite West Ham’s difficult season.
Reports have suggested United are currently leading the race for Fernandes, with the likelihood of a deal increasing further if the Hammers suffer relegation. West Ham are still expected to demand a substantial fee, potentially as high as £84 million, after Fernandes emerged as one of the club’s standout performers with five goals and three assists this season.
Now, the midfielder has added fuel to the speculation himself.
Speaking during an appearance on the Premier League’s YouTube channel, Fernandes was asked which football era he would most like to have played in. His answer immediately caught the attention of United supporters.
“Cristiano in Manchester,” Fernandes replied. “United were unbelievable at that time and Cristiano was amazing.”
Cristiano Ronaldo’s first spell at Old Trafford remains one of the most successful periods in the club’s modern history, with the Portuguese superstar helping United win three Premier League titles and the Champions League between 2003 and 2009.
While Fernandes stopped short of directly addressing transfer rumours, his admiration for that era of Manchester United will only intensify speculation that a move to Old Trafford could appeal to him if the opportunity arises this summer.
