West Ham United’s fight for Premier League survival is still alive heading into the final stretch of the campaign.
Tottenham’s draw with Leeds on Monday left the Hammers just two points behind Spurs with two matches remaining, meaning there is still a route to safety if results fall their way over the coming weeks.
With uncertainty still hanging over the club’s future, preparations are already being made behind the scenes for every possible scenario — including the prospect of major player sales should relegation become a reality.
And now, one of West Ham’s brightest young talents has reportedly been given a huge valuation amid growing Premier League interest.
West Ham Set Fernandes Price
West Ham have reportedly slapped an £84million asking price on midfielder Mateus Fernandes as speculation surrounding his future continues to intensify.
The 21-year-old, once described as “exceptional” by former Southampton manager Russell Martin, only arrived at the London Stadium last summer in a deal worth around £42m following his impressive performances on the south coast.
Despite West Ham’s difficult campaign, Fernandes has emerged as one of the club’s standout performers and is viewed internally as a cornerstone of the team moving forward.
According to Football Insider, Manchester United are among the clubs keeping tabs on the Portuguese midfielder, although West Ham are making it clear they have no intention of letting him go cheaply.
The report claims the Hammers would demand at least double what they originally paid for Fernandes if they are forced into negotiations this summer.
There is believed to be increasing concern that relegation could force West Ham into difficult financial decisions, with Fernandes viewed as one of the club’s most valuable assets in the current market.
However, club officials are determined that any potential departure would only happen on their terms, with the midfielder’s age, potential and long-term value all contributing to the enormous valuation.
Fernandes has impressed with his composure in possession, energy in midfield and maturity beyond his years this season, attracting admiration from several top-flight clubs in the process.
Whether West Ham can keep hold of him may ultimately depend on which division they are playing in next season, but one thing appears certain — the club will not entertain cut-price offers for one of their prized young stars.
