Sheffield Wednesday youngster Matt Penney is currently on loan at Bundesliga 2 side St. Pauli and it is so far proving to be a good learning experience for the defender.
The 22-year-old has spent time on loan previously at Mansfield and Bradford without much success, making just three appearances in total, but when fit he has been a regular for the German outfit this term. Indeed, Penney has played 10 times in the league, and it is likely that no game will stand-out more for him than Saturday’s visit to fierce rivals Hamburg, who are fighting for promotion back to the top flight.
That’s because the left-back unleashed a brilliant strike from outside the box to double St. Pauli’s lead in the first half and some Wednesday supporters were left in awe at his ability to rifle the ball into the bottom corner from around 25 yards out.

Penney’s promising performances have offered a lot of encouragement to Owls fans and some are hopeful that his contract is sorted out before interest begins to rise. One fan compared the strike to “prime Tommy Spurr” in a nod to the club’s former left-back. With that in mind, here’s a look at the reaction among these Wednesday supporters on social media after the club posted it on Twitter.

Looks like he got out at the right time, wouldn’t have done him any good being at the club right now with all that’s going on and look at the size of the crowd he’s playing in front of!

Any chance of getting his contract sorted before the summer or is that too organised for this outfit #swfc

Have the bad feeling we’ll not see him in a Wednesday shirt again, they can get him for free, hopefully he’ll sign a new contract with us.
