Mertens in: The potential new-look Chelsea attack if Sarri joins and gets his man

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping that Maurizio Sarri will come to Stamford Bridge sooner, rather than later. The Blues are a team that desperately needs leadership, and Antonio Conte is not providing it as present.

Whilst the Blues’ managerial fate is uncertain, that doesn’t mean that fans haven’t had any indication about which players could move to Stamford Bridge this summer.

Indeed, according to the Telegraph, Maurizio Sarri has already identified a player that he wants at Chelsea if he moves to the club – Dries Mertens.

Currently playing for Napoli, Mertens has enjoyed quite the rise over the last few years, and Sarri apparently views him as the perfect player to play on the right-hand side of the Chelsea attack.

However, if he were to move to the club, where exactly would he fit in, and perhaps more importantly, who would play alongside him?

Would this be the potential new-look Chelsea attack if Sarri joins and gets his man?

LW – Eden Hazard

Eden Hazard is facing an uncertain future at Chelsea, but Sarri will want him in this team.

The Belgian is one of Europe’s best players, and with good reason.

He’ss lightning fast, he has incredible technical ability, and he really knows where the net is.

If Chelsea lose him, they will be taking 10 steps back. Under Sarri, he could go to the next level.

ST – Alvaro Morata/Michy Batshuayi

Alvaro Morata had a tough season last year, and it remains to be seen as to whether he’ll still be a Chelsea player next season.

If he is, then you’d expect Sarri to be able to improve him, given the Italian’s focus on offensive play.

Otherwise, perhaps Michy Batshuayi could return. The Belgian enjoyed a fantastic spell over in Germany last term, and it’s now or never with regards to his long-term Chelsea future.

Either way, Sarri has options here.

RW – Dries Mertens

Sarri’s favourite.

Mertens can play across the attack, but a role on the right makes sense.

There, he can make use of his fantastic pace and energy, whilst he’d also be able to contribute more goals than Willian, who perhaps could move to Manchester United.

He’s an older statesman, but experience is not a trait that can be undervalued.

The Blues need quality, and Mertens has it.
