Middlesbrough are a Championship club with many high profile signings to their name over the years, notably during their time playing in the Premier League. The Boro have only spent over £10m on a transfer six times in history, and three of these came in the early 2000s. First Ugo Ehigu joined from Aston Villa for almost £11m in 2000-01, then Massimo Maccarone followed two seasons laters for over £11m, joining from FC Empoli.
This record transfer arrival fee was smashed by Brazilian centre-forward Afonso Alves who was brought in from Eredivisie side Heerenveen for a massive £15.30m ahead of the 2007-08 season. It was not until ten seasons later that this transfer record was broken. In 2017-18, Nottingham Forest star striker Britt Assombalonga joined Boro for £15.39m making him their biggest ever transfer arrival in history.
Boro also splashed out over £10m on two centre-forwards, Jordan Rhodes who arrived from Blackburn in 2015-16, and Danish international Martin Braithwaite who joined from Ligue 1 side Toulouse just two seasons after. Notably Dutch international Marten de Roon, joined from Atalanta for just under £10m in 2016-17 before moving back to his old side the season later for £12.15m.
Incredibly, Italian legend Fabrizio Ravanelli’s £8.80m transfer fee from back in 1996-97 still stands as Boro’s eight highest transfer arrivals of all time as he moved from Juventus.
Moving on to transfer record departures for Boro, one man stands out in particular – Adama Traore. Up until the summer of 2018-19, Yakubu Aiyegbeni was the club’s record sale as the Nigerian joined Everton for a large sum of almost £15m. The young Spaniard Traore joined Boro the season before his departure as he arrived from Aston Villa for a much smaller fee of £7.43m. After catching the eye of many Premier League sides, the former Barcelona youth winger joined Wolverhampton Wanderers for a record £18m fee. This transfer was closely followed by the sale of centre-back Ben Gibson who joined Burnley during the same transfer window, for a £15m fee.
One of Middlesbrough’s greatest ever players and signings was Brazilian Premier League legend Juninho Paulista who arrived in 2002-03 for his third spell at the club. Juninho arrived from LaLiga side Atletico Madrid for just £6.21m in 2002 after first playing for Boro during the later 1990s.
During his first spell, he was crowned as runner-up to Gianfranco Zola for the FWA Player of the Year award, though ultimately left to pursue his Brazil World Cup hopes. He was later voted as Boro’s greatest ever signing by many fans and he will always be remembered.
