Liverpool: Reds set to beat Spurs in race for Milan Skriniar

Liverpool could win the race to sign the Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar, according to reports.

Skriniar on Anfield radar

The 25-year-old has been a key asset in Antonio Conte’s Serie A side in recent years and has scored four goals and provided four assists in 130 appearances, making 42 outings in all competitions during the 2019/20 campaign. (TransferMarkt).

With the absence of Virgil van Dijk and with Joel Matip struggling to consistently stay fit, Joe Gomez is Liverpool’s only established centre-back available for selection, with midfiedler Fabinho and youngsters Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips filling the shoes of their senior colleagues in recent weeks.

But according to ESPN, manager Jurgen Klopp could look at bringing Skriniar in to step in for their Dutch talisman for the rest of the current campaign, with Van Dijk’s return date still unclear at this stage.

The report added that Tottenham failed to reach an agreement with the Slovakian centre-back during the off-season, as Inter refused to lower their demands of a €60m (£54.1m) transfer fee. Because of this, the Reds could jump to the front of the queue for his services.

Transfer Tavern take

As a player that has played four full seasons in Serie A with Sampdoria and Inter (TransferMarkt), he possesses plenty of experience, something that Liverpool could need during the final five months of the season.

However, his price tag does appear to be a bit steep, considering the Reds paid an extra £21m for Virgil van Dijk and with Matip not costing anything.

Klopp, as always, will be keeping his cards close to his chest. Having spent a significant amount in the summer, Liverpool could continue to turn to their youth setup until Van Dijk’s return.

In other news, Liverpool fans stunned by ex-Reds’ player development.
