Although United are currently flying in three competitions, the season is starting to turn into its business end, and an important transfer window awaits for both sides of Manchester, so says our barman. While Pep would surely be concentrating on defensive reinforcements to tighten up his back line, Mourinho has surely marked three key areas he needs to improve, to bring more silverware to Old Trafford this season.

Perhaps the Premier League is out of reach, though some astute additions could see United go for either the Champions League or the FA Cup.

Despite a sell before you buy warning, Ed Woodward has reportedly given Mourinho a £90m war-chest in January. Although our punters think that the board are looking at trying to balance the books, and with up to eight players running out of contracts in the summer, Woodward and Mourinho may look at cashing in on a few players as an option to generate more spending money.

Left Back

Nobody’s really held down the left back spot since the departure of Patrice Evra left the Theatre of Dreams. Indeed, many have tried, with the likes of Luke Shaw, Marcus Rojo and Daley Blind all playing in that position over the years.

Despite Shaw being the only recognised left back at the club, his form and injuries have hampered his ability to make this spot his own.

We’ve seen just how important that areas has become of late.

Centre Midfield

Although Mourinho has five midfield options to choose from to fill his two starting places, in the likes of Pogba, Matic, Fellaini, Carrick and Herrera, injuries, suspensions and medical problems have all added to many a headache for the Portuguese coach.

With three of his midfield men’s contracts running out this summer, Mourinho must surely want to secure players for now and United’s future. It’s an area United have boasted some of the best players in the world in over the years, after all.

Left Winger

Mourinho has opted to bounce between Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford this season on the left-hand side, despite both being right-footed and wanting a more central role.

A left-footed winger with pace would surely revolutionize Mourinho’s tactical options, having missed out on Ivan Persisic over the course of the summer. It’d give the side much more balance in big games, helping Romelu Lukaku no end.
