Newcastle are preparing a bid for FC Porto striker Samu Aghehowa. The 21-year-old is highly rated, having scored 19 goals in 30 Liga Portugal appearances for Porto last season.
He is off to a flying start this season already, scoring a brace in Porto’s 3-0 season opening victory against Vitoria on August 11th. Porto are bracing for offers for their star man and previously valued him at around £80m.
Football Insider has reported that Newcastle see Samu as a replacement for Alexander Isak. Isak has become unsettled following an approach from Liverpool and has so far refused to play for Newcastle again.
This has prompted a furious search from the Magpies. They were beaten to the signatures of top targets Hugo Ekitike, Liam Delap, and Benjamin Sesko – by Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester United respectively.
They have also so far failed in their attempts for Brentford ace Yoane Wissa. Newcastle were in fact believed to be on the market for another striker regardless of what happens with Isak, with then backup striker Callum Wilson suffering many injury concerns.
Wilson – who has now joined West Ham – was also ageing at 33 years old so the need for more firepower was apparent. As it stands, the young William Osula is the only alternative striker in the Newcastle ranks.
Magpies keen on Samu
Samu has been on the Newcastle radar for a while. The 6ft 4in Spanish international ended last term with 27 goals across all competitions for Porto. He joined Porto from Atletico Madrid last summer in a €15m deal and has impressed in Liga Portugal.
He signed a five-year deal at the club which contains a €100m release clause but the Portuguese giants are understood to be willing to sell for less. Newcastle have held initial talks with Porto previously but are now preparing on official offer.
Porto will be aware that Newcastle could be backed by a windfall from the sale of Isak. All parties will be awaiting the potential domino effect.
