Newcastle United History

Newcastle was born after a game of football was won by a team of nine men, against a team of eight on Tyneside. Soon after in 1877, Newcastle’s first club, Tyne Association, was born. Another side, Newcastle Rangers was formed in 1878, and as soon as they moved across the Tyne, an enclosed ground close to Leazes Terrace was immediately referred to as St. James’ Park in September of 1880.

Newcastle United’s origins however, are to be found within two minor football clubs on the east of the city. West End were on the brink of collapse in 1891 so St. James’ Park was offered to East End who later agreed on a new name of Newcastle United – stay up to date with the latest Newcastle United news with breaking stories coming straight from St James’ Park.

The Magpies are a Premier League club with great honours despite recent poor luck. They have been crowned English Football League Champions four times, although having narrowly missed out on the Premier League title twice as runners-up. They have won a notable six FA Cups, as well as regular European Cup entries in the past. A recent triumph which may be overlooked is their Championship title in 2017, after getting relegated the season before in 2016. As well as honours, the Magpies have had their fair share of Premier League legends which will always be remembered. One man in particular, Alan Shearer, is Newcastle’s all-time top goal-scorer with 206 club goals. One of the Premier League’s most experienced goalkeepers, Shay Given made 462 appearances for the Magpies, and his passion for the club was unmatched.

Newcastle are owned by British Billionaire Mike Ashely, who has been known for his lack of financial backing for recent managers such as Rafa Benitez. It has been reported that Ashley is in fact looking for a new buyer of the club – find out breaking Newcastle United news here.

Current manager, Steve Bruce was appointed last summer, and has kept Newcastle afloat in the mid-table of the Premier League. Star Signings, Allan Saint-Maximin and Joelinton are yet to prove their worth, despite recent glimpses of form. The Magpies will hope to finish the season strong, and even qualify for the Europa League if they step it up a gear, as recent results have not helped.
