Newcastle United have already had a busy summer transfer window, and it shows no signs of slowing down on Deadline Day.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has reported that Newcastle have agreed a deal with Brentford to sign striker Yoane Wissa, after agreeing the £125m sale of Alexander Isak to Liverpool last night.
The striker saga has been a turbulent one for the St James’ Park faithful this summer, but last week’s club-record signing of Nick Woltemade paved the way for the departure of their wantaway Swede.
Malick Thiaw, Anthony Elanga, Jacob Ramsey and Aaron Ramsdale have also arrived on Tyneside this summer, strengthening Eddie Howe’s squad ahead of their Champions League campaign.
In the Premier League, however, Newcastle remain without a win after three games, having failed to score against Aston Villa and Leeds United.
Eddie Howe will be hoping that the late deals for attacking reinforcements inject the firepower needed to reignite their season.
While Wissa’s move is expected to be completed pending a medical today, reports now link Newcastle with Fenerbahçe defender Jayden Oosterwolde.
According to Turkish outlet Aspor (via Sport Witness), the Magpies have tabled a loan offer with an option to buy next summer, though Fenerbahçe are believed to have rejected the proposal.
Newcastle were first linked with Oosterwolde last summer, but cooled their interest when he suffered a knee injury.
They are not alone in their reignited interest, as it is further noted that West Ham United have the talented defender on their radar too.
Should Newcastle sign Jayden Oosterwolde?
The immediate priority at St James’ Park remains securing their striker deal before the deadline at 7pm.
Though with four competitions to contend with this season, Newcastle will naturally look to strengthen elsewhere if opportunities arise, in an attempt to build on last year’s Carabao Cup success.
At 24 year’s old, Oosterwolde is an appealing long-term prospect thanks to his versatility, capable of playing both centrally and at left-back.
The ball-playing defender has outstanding technical ability and blistering pace, boasting strengths in both dribbling and tackling.
However, with Dan Burn, Lewis Hall, Sven Botman and Tino Livramento already capable of covering those roles, Newcastle are unlikely to push too hard for the Dutchman’s signature today.
Even so, it will be worth watching whether further defensive reinforcements arrive before the window closes, alongside the expected addition of Wissa.
