“Progress”: Newcastle journo drops update on Bruno saga

Rebekka Arnold 29 July 2026, 9:56 3 minutes read

Newcastle United are once again involved in one of the biggest stories of the summer transfer window.

The Magpies dominated the headlines last summer when striker Alexander Isak turned his back on the Toon for a £125m move to Liverpool, and it feels like history is repeating itself with the ongoing saga surrounding club captain Bruno Guimaraes.

The Brazilian midfielder has reportedly told Newcastle that he would like to explore a move to Arsenal this summer, with the Premier League champions also cited as the most interested club.

However, a new update has emerged this week that will keep the frustrations alive for the St James’ Park faithful.

What’s the latest Newcastle United transfer news?

The Chronicle’s chief writer, Lee Ryder, took to social media yesterday to provide an update on the developing situation ahead of Guimaraes’ expected return to pre-season this week.

Ryder revealed on social media platform X:

“For all those asking on whether Bruno Guimaraes in “advanced talks”.

“Of course, we know #Arsenal are interested. But no bid, and suggestions there has been progress being described as “not true” right now.

“Looks like this is going to drag on for a bit. #nufc”

Will Bruno Guimaraes leave Newcastle?

The situation involving the midfielder, his current club and the Premier League champions remains something of a head-scratcher, as there appears to have been no genuine progress despite more than a month of constant media speculation.

Guimaraes’ imminent return to the training ground will be watched closely by Newcastle supporters, as his involvement in pre-season could ultimately prove to be the turning point in determining whether he remains on Tyneside or joins Arsenal to help defend their Premier League title.

After months of speculation, supporters simply want clarity over where his future lies, whether that comes in the form of reassurance that he is staying or seeing the club respond decisively to his departure with a strong finish to the summer transfer window.

Speaking after the pre-season friendly with Gateshead last weekend, Eddie Howe offered an insight into the communication between himself and his captain:

“We’ve had some really good conversations, before the World Cup, during the World Cup and after the World Cup,”

“What we speak about obviously has to remain private, but just a great player, a great person.”

“I don’t know what’s going to happen with Bruno’s future. That’s for other people to speculate about, but also conversations that I’m not part of.”

All things considered, the only thing that is clear at this stage is that it remains unclear whether Guimaraes will commit to another season at St James’ Park.

However, his return to the training ground later this week could finally provide supporters with the answers they have been anxiously awaiting.
