Newcastle “decision” expected after Bruno bombshell

Rebekka Arnold 9 July 2026, 7:00 3 minutes read

Newcastle United have once again stolen the spotlight in the transfer window this summer, and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down.

The Geordies have made headlines for sanctioning the sales of two of their most influential players, with Anthony Gordon jetting off to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali moving south to Tottenham Hotspur.

Now, fresh reports have sent supporters into a frenzy as perhaps the most important player in their squad has asked to leave St James’ Park.

What’s the latest Newcastle transfer news?

It has been rumoured over the last few weeks that Arsenal were interested in signing Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, but there was no confirmation that their captain would entertain a move.

However, The Athletic’s David Ornstein dropped a major bombshell on Wednesday evening when he revealed that the Brazil international had requested to leave the club this summer.

The revelation has now been followed up with an update from Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who has brought further clarity to the unfolding situation.

Posting to social media platform X, Romano revealed:

“Arsenal prepare new official bid for Bruno Guimarães: Arteta wants him.”

“£55m already rejected, second approach at £65m package rejected too — fee in between £65m and £90m could accelerate talks.”

“Bruno told Newcastle last week that he wants #AFC move but won’t create issues, leaving decision in club hands.”

Will Newcastle sell Bruno Guimaraes?

There is no doubt that the Magpies will be reluctant to part ways with their Brazilian skipper this summer, especially after already losing Gordon and Tonali.

Indeed, the last thing Newcastle and Eddie Howe will want is another situation like Alexander Isak’s, where it turns toxic and drags on until Deadline Day.

The North East giants have already shown through the swift sales of their two players this summer that they have no intention of being held hostage.

However, in the case of Guimaraes, it would come as no surprise if the club attempted to find a resolution before sanctioning his departure.

As Romano’s latest update suggests, there is no immediate threat of the situation becoming disruptive, as the midfielder is willing to leave the decision in Newcastle’s hands rather than force a move.

However, there will be much for the Geordies to consider regarding where his long-term future lies and whether keeping an unsettled captain is the right approach heading into a season where significant improvement is needed to get back on track.

What happens next in Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes saga?

The coming weeks could prove to be the defining period of Newcastle’s summer.

Having already lost Gordon and Tonali, the Magpies can’t afford another major departure without a clear plan in place for a successor.

While Guimaraes has made his ambitions known, Romano’s latest update suggests there is still room for the two parties to find a solution that suits everyone rather than allowing the situation to escalate.

Whether Newcastle eventually sanction a sale or convince their captain to stay, one thing is certain: Eddie Howe can’t allow uncertainty surrounding one of his most influential players to overshadow preparations for a season that already carries enormous pressure.

Regardless of Guimaraes’ future, recruitment cannot stagnate if Newcastle are to return to the Premier League stronger next season.
