“Hopeful”: Newcastle journo drops huge update on Jaissle arrival

Rebekka Arnold 31 July 2026, 9:21 3 minutes read

Newcastle United are experiencing huge upheaval this summer, with the departure of Eddie Howe sending shockwaves throughout Tyneside.

The 48-year-old manager called time on his five-year stint at St James’ Park this week after a difficult season with the Magpies and is set to be swiftly replaced by Al-Ahli’s Matthias Jaissle.

With a pre-season training camp in Spain set to commence this weekend and just one month left to complete their summer recruitment, Newcastle are entering what could prove to be a transformative period over the coming weeks.

What’s the latest on Matthias Jaissle’s appointment?

While the club are yet to release an official statement confirming Howe’s departure or Jaissle’s arrival, strong reports suggest the new manager will join the squad at their training camp in Spain this weekend.

Sky Sports journalist and Newcastle United expert Keith Downie has provided further insight into the unfolding situation at the club.

Updating supporters on social media platform X, Downie revealed:

“Newcastle are hopeful new boss Matthias Jaissle will arrive in Spain tomorrow to meet his new players on their pre-season training camp.”

“The 38-year-old is close to being appointed by Newcastle, with Eddie Howe leaving after nearly five years. Howe’s backroom staff are also leaving Newcastle United.”

“Assistant Jason Tindall, and coaches Stephen Purchess and Simon Weatherston are amongst those leaving alongside Howe.”

“We also understand that Graeme Jones, who was employed by the club before Howe’s arrival in 2021, is also set to leave.”

“Newcastle’s squad fly to Spain for the training camp at lunchtime today, which will be led by Sporting Director Ross Wilson and Head of Performance James Bunce until Jaissle takes over this weekend.”

What’s the latest on Bruno Guimaraes’ future?

While appointing a new manager will keep the club busy over the coming days, the frustrating situation surrounding club captain Bruno Guimaraes remains a major concern for Newcastle supporters.

The Brazilian midfielder has been consistently linked with a move to Arsenal and has reportedly expressed a desire to leave, although the Premier League champions are yet to make a formal approach to Newcastle.

There has been little movement from either camp in recent weeks, and it had been expected that Guimaraes would return to pre-season training in time to fly to Spain with his teammates this afternoon.

However, a fresh update from Chronicle journalist Lee Ryder has altered that timeline, further fuelling speculation over his future.

In a brief update on X, Ryder claimed:

“Bruno Guimaraes is scheduled to travel to La Manga on Sunday. #NUFC”

“It is part of his post-World Cup fitness plan that he joins up a little later than the team.”

What next for Newcastle United?

All eyes will be on the training camp in Spain this weekend as supporters await the arrival of their new manager and the return of their captain.

Uncertainty and change lie ahead, and Newcastle must ensure Jaissle is backed in the transfer market and given the tools required to get the club back on track next season.

The arrivals of Bazoumana Toure, Aladji Bamba, Ewan Jaouen and Sean Steur have demonstrated the hierarchy’s commitment to investing in exciting young talent, but there is still plenty of work to be done if supporters are to head into the new campaign with confidence.

With that being said, the coming weeks promise to be fascinating for Newcastle fans as they discover what this new era will look like and whether these changes can provide the fresh start the club desperately needs.
