Newcastle United fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are breathing a sigh of relief after securing Premier League safety courtesy of a 2-1 victory against Queens Park Rangers earlier when news arrives from Mirror Football that Liverpool striker Andy Carroll wants to make a fairytale return to St. James’ Park this summer.
The 24-year-old left Newcastle in a English record £35 million transfer to join Liverpool in January 2011 but his time at Anfield has been a disappointment with only 11 goals in his 55 appearances for the Reds.
Carroll has spent the last season on-loan at West Ham where has netted seven times in his 22 starts and the Hammers want to bring him to the club on a permanent basis with co-owner David Sullivan claiming that they would be holding talks to sign the England international.
However today’s reports suggest that he is keen on a move back to his former club and would be willing to take pay-cut on his current £90,000-a-week wages.
The news would be a welcome boost for the Magpies with the Mirror reporting that the club could face a battle to keep hold of their top players. The likes of Yohan Cabaye, Hatem Ben Arfa, defenders Fabricio Coloccini and Steven Taylor, goalkeeper Tim Krul will be subject to interest from other clubs during the summer.
