Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes is the subject of potential interest from Chelsea, journalist Simon Phillips has claimed.

The Lowdown: Bruno excelling at Newcastle

The Brazilian has become a new hero at St James' Park since arriving in January, improving the Magpies hugely and performing to a consistently high level.

Guimaraes has scored seven goals in 27 appearances for Newcastle, but it is his all-round game and mentality that have shone through, with Alan Shearer hailing him as 'absolutely magnificent'.

Unfortunately, the 24-year-old's performances haven't gone unnoticed, following this new update.

The Latest: Chelsea keen on signing

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Phillips confirmed that Chelsea are interested in signing Guimaraes, although it is seen as unlikely:

"I've been told at the moment, Chelsea are looking at Edson Alvarez from Ajax, Moises Caicedo from Brighton, Weston McKennie from Juventus and Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle.

"The latter seems ambitious. Chelsea have a shortlist of midfielders they are looking at for a priority area in January, and again in the summer. Declan Rice is more possible come the summer rather than in January, same goes for Jude Bellingham, but I think he goes to either Liverpool or Real Madrid."

The Verdict: Why would he leave?

This is a worrying update considering the huge impact Guimaraes has made at Newcastle, but there should also be confidence that he is more than willing to stay put on Tyneside.

He looks happy at St James' currently, as proven by his post-match interview after Sunday's 2-1 win at Tottenham with Eddie Howe's side going in the right direction.

In fact, Newcastle's trajectory is arguably more promising than Chelsea's at the moment, so moving to Stamford Bridge could even be a step down in the long run.
