Newcastle United: Eddie Howe handed injury boost

Newcastle United: Eddie Howe handed injury boost -Newcastle United News

Eddie Howe has been handed a boost after pictures from Newcastle United’s session at Darsley Park on Tuesday have revealed that Matt Ritchie has returned to full training after suffering a knee injury.

The Lowdown: Injury woes

Whilst the Magpies set about bolstering their squad options in January, an unprecedented number of injuries left Eddie Howe’s side light as they faced off with Brighton on Saturday.

Despite winning the clash 2-1, Newcastle were without Kieran Trippier, Callum Wilson, Isaac Hayden and Matt Ritchie, alongside the usual omissions from the club’s 25-man Premier League squad.

Star player Allan Saint-Maximin was also a doubt for the game, however, he appeared for the final 26 minutes, coming on as a substitute for Jacob Murphy.

The Latest: Ritchie’s return

However, Newcastle have been handed an injury boost as the side prepare for their upcoming fixture against Southampton.

Sharing photos taken from Tuesday’s training session, The Chronicle have revealed that left-back Ritchie was spotted taking part, having made a recovery from his knee injury which he sustained in January’s shock FA Cup defeat to Cambridge United.

Despite this, it has been claimed that the Magpies’ away trip to Southampton could still be too soon for the 32-year-old.

The Verdict: Welcome return

Ritchie’s return will come as a welcome boost to Howe, as Newcastle are set to undertake a busy period, having to play their next three games within a seven-day period.

Even if Ritchie, once hailed as ‘quality’ by Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher, is not first choice, he will allow for rotation at the back, with left-back alternative Jamal Lewis ready to undergo surgery later this week.

With the recent arrival of Matt Target from Aston Villa, Ritchie is set to face a tough battle if he is to regain his spot at left-back in the starting XI, but it is certainly a boost for Howe to get more than one option in as many positions as possible, with his former Bournemouth player capable of playing anywhere down the left flank.
