Newcastle United are set to rival Wolverhampton Wanderers for Arsenal ace Ainsley Maitland-Niles in the summer transfer window, according to Sky Sports.
As per the outlet, Steve Bruce is monitoring his developments, as the 22-year-old is set to potentially cost them around £20m.
Indeed, Maitland-Niles enjoyed a fine 2019/20 season at the Emirates Stadium, playing in 32 games in all competitions, scoring one goal and providing a further two assists (via Transfermarkt).
Does Maitland-Niles start for Newcastle?
He started the FA Cup final against Frank Lampard’s Chelsea as a left wing-back as the Gunners came out 2-1 winners thanks to a fine brace from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to cancel out Christian Pulisic’s early opener for the Blues (per BBC).
That is one of three FA Cup titles that he has now won as a Gooner, showing that he has a winning mentality.
Maitland-Niles’ ability to play in a wide range of different roles on the pitch, including at left wing-back, would also be very useful to the Magpies should they be able to beat Wolves to his signature.
The England youth player is also an international champion, having being part of the squad that won the Under-20 World Cup back in 2017, further highlighting his winning mentality not just at club level but for his country as well.
At just 22 years of age, too, Maitland-Niles still has time to grow and develop further as a player, and his potential could well be realised at St James’ Park if Newcastle can get a deal over the line for him before the window shuts.
