Nottingham Forest are interested in signing Burnley winger Maxwel Cornet ahead of the Premier League season but have been told they must stump up his full release clause.

The Lowdown: Cornet rumours

The Reds have been busy in the transfer market this summer, having already spent more than £70m on reinforcements. However, Forest boss Steve Cooper could still yet add fresh faces to his squad ahead of the window closing.

According to the Daily Mail, the newly promoted side join Everton and Fulham in the race to secure the Ivory Coast international’s signature.

The report suggests that Forest must either stump up his entire £17.5m release clause or offer even more if they want to pay in instalments.

The Latest: Taylor’s claim

Taylor understands that Forest are indeed in the hunt for Cornet, but the Clarets are not budging on their demands.

Speaking with GiveMeSport, the journalist claimed: “Cornet is one of interest to Forest. However, Burnley are still pointing towards the £17.5million relegation clause.

“Everton have tried to get him on loan. They’ve also tried to see if Burnley would reduce that price but, at the moment, Burnley are obviously not really under any pressure to offload him even though Vincent Kompany said that he expects Cornet to depart.”

The Verdict: Great signing

Hailed by journalist Andy Jones as having made an ‘electric’ start to life in a Clarets shirt last summer, the 25-year-old could be a great signing for Cooper’s side, even if he may break their transfer record, which is currently set slightly above that £17.5m number.

Having scored nine goals in 26 Premier League appearances last season, Cornet was responsible for over a quarter of Burnley’s league goals.

With the proven top-flight ace on just £44,000-per-week, this seems like a fantastic signing for Forest given the player has shown he can find the back of the net for a team who may find themselves battling down the bottom.
