Our Premier League Weekend Dream Team

Jamie Murphy 23 April 2012, 15:09 4 minutes read

The best performers in what turned out to be yet another exhilarating weekend of Premier League football, with nothing but an already foreseen relegation decided as we head into the last week of April.

Paul Robinson

No keeper really stood out this weekend, but Robinson provided a solid platform from which his side could earn a rare win. He kept Norwich at bay on more than one occasion, and his distribution was typically effective with his long punts up field regularly worrying the Canaries back line.

Tony Hibbert

Perhaps one of the least likely to feature in a list such as this, it’s fair to say Tony Hibbert is one of the more nondescript names in the top flight. But at Old Trafford he played like a superstar, plowing forward at ever opportunity the right back troubled Patrice Evra all afternoon. His delivery was also excellent as he looked to get the ball into the box frequently to the likes of Fellaini and Jelavic.

Laurent Koscielny

One of the more under rated defenders in the league, Koscielny has improved immeasurably since his mistake ridden debut campaign. Looks far more assured alongside the fantastic Vermaelen, and marshaled Torres with ease. The Gunnerslook a far more respectable outfit at the back these days.

Gary Cahill

It was a tough ask for Cahill to follow up his heroics against Barcalona with a performance at the Emirates, but that’s exactly what he did with another fantastic display alongside John Terry. His side needed to get something against their top 4 rivals, and considering their European exploits a draw represented a very commendable result. After last nights result at the Camp Nou, they’ll be real hope they can end the season by beating all the odds.

Ryan Bertrand

It was a battle of young English left backs at the Emirates, and Bertrand just edged Gibbs with a solid display against Walcott and company. Showed experience beyond his years as he gave the Arsenal winger very little opportunity to exploit his pace, and played the ball out of defense superbly at times with his team up against it for large spells.

Junior Hoilett

Has been a shining light in a dark and dreary season for Blackburn, and yet again saved them from the brink with an absolutely majestic display. Manages to blend his lightening pace with a fine end product, and showcased his ability to score great goals with a thunderbolt against tenacious Norwich. Survival or not, this boy’s destined for far bigger things.

Marouane Fellaini DREAM TEAM STAR MAN

What a performance from the Belgian. Absolutely bossed the United midfield in one of his best performances in a Toffees shirt. Set up Pieenar for his equaliser and scored an absolute beauty to light the fuse for an unbelievable come back. A game that will live long in the memory.

Yohan Cabaye

The classy Frenchman was again on top form as he dismantled an average Stoke outfit. Starting to add goals to his fine build up play, and will be absolutely crucial if Newcastle are to seal a deserved Champions League spot.

Hatem Ben Arfa

Like his France team mate, has come into form at exactly the right time. Has so much in his locker, with a combination of skill, ruthlessness in front of goal and an excellent final ball, the 25 year old is one of the most feared players in the league right now.

Danny Welbeck

It was a toss up between him and the irresistible Pappis Cisse, but Welbeck deserves his place after a classy showing on Sunday. Scored a sublime goal, and set up another two superbly as he staked a real claim for an England starting pace. His link up play with Rooney was exceptional, and could be vital in the Euro’s this summer.

Nikica Jelavic

Another January signing who’s made a huge impact. His finishing is second to none at present, and the Croatian scored another brace for Everton at Old Trafford. The first, a wonderful cushioned header to the far post, was typical of his sharpness in recent times whilst his second was cool considering the circumstances. An absolute snip at ÂŁ5 million.
