The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern were shocked to hear that Dimitri Payet could be set to leave West Ham United…
Arguably the Premier League’s best player last season, the Frenchman signed a new deal with the Hammers less than a year ago – but it would appear as though his time at the London Stadium is coming to an end.
Whilst certainly disappointing for the West Ham fans in the Tavern, in truth, many aren’t surprised. Payet is one of Europe’s best players, and West Ham are seriously struggling – so a departure was always mooted for the midfielder in the Tavern.
With regards to potential destinations, Marseille have been linked – but one side that the fans in the Transfer Tavern think that Payet would be perfect for is Chelsea.
The Blues are flying high in the Premier League this season, and manager Antonio Conte is surely on the lookout for a few more options going forward – and given his current circumstances, a deal could be a match made in heaven.
With that said, here are 2 reasons why Payet is perfect for Chelsea…
Replacement

Earlier this month, Oscar left Chelsea for China – leaving the Blues with a sizeable gap with regards to their attacking depth.
Whilst not a regular starter at Stamford Bridge this season, Oscar would often feature from the bench or in cup ties – meaning that Conte now has one less player to choose from in those circumstances.
Between now and the end of the season, games are going to be coming thick and fast – and so additional depth is absolutely vital.
Chelsea only have 3 attacking midfielders in the form of Pedro, Hazard and Willian – meaning that a move for a fourth would be wise for Conte.
If Payet is available, he could be a great choice.
Alternative

Payet is unlike any other player at Chelsea.
He is far closer to Oscar than he is to Hazard or Willian, and so he would be fairly unique with regards to the options that Antonio Conte has to him.
This would be important because, at present, Chelsea are a fairly one-dimensional side. They have played the same system over the past few months, using largely the same players – and teams are beginning to find the Blues out.
Antonio Conte should look for a few players that he can bring in to change the system around, and Payet would be perfect for that. An excellent number 10, Payet would serve Chelsea well should they decide to switch back to a 4-2-3-1.
