Perfect alongside Christensen: Chelsea would have long-term defensive option in 23-year-old

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping that Roman Abramovich will invest heavily in his team this summer. The Blues need improvement, and fast, especially if they’re going to challenge at the top of the table next season.

Fortunately, the Blues look to be making initial moves already, at least according to Alfredo Pedulla. According to him, Chelsea are edging closer to a move for Juventus defender Daniele Rugani, with a move between €30 and €35 million (£26.3 million and £30.7 million).

Though the defence isn’t an area that necessarily needs urgent improvement, it makes sense for the Blues to improve it if the opportunity arises, and our landlord thinks that a move for Rugani would give Chelsea a chance to build the perfect defensive combination for years to come.

After all, Rugani was a regular in Turin last term. He made 22 league appearances, and that’s no easy feat given the quality on display at Juventus.

He is very capable defensively, but what sets him apart from most defences is his passing ability. The Italian is fantastic with the ball at his feet, and this is important as it allows him to help move play forward and out of the defence. That said, he’s also a fantastic tackler, he’s brilliant at reading the game and he’s solid in the air too – marking him out as arguably the complete defender.

Granted, at 23-years-old, he’s still developing, but in a few years, he could form an ideal partnership with Andreas Christensen in the heart of the Chelsea defence.
