The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern want Jurgen Klopp to sign a new defender this summer. Virgil van Dijk has been a revelation at the back, but the Dutchman needs a new partner.
The perfect partner, according to our landlord, could come in the form of Roma ace Kostas Manolas. According to Alfredo Pedulla, the Greek defender could be available for €38 million (£33.2 million) as per his release clause.
Granted, that’s a lot of money, but he’d be worth every penny.
At 27-years-old, he’s just entering the prime of his career, and he’d form a deadly partnership alongside van Dijk. Like the Dutchman, he’s a strong and robust defender, and so he’d have no issues transitioning to the Premier League. Italy is much like the English top flight in that it’s physical and demanding, and so Klopp wouldn’t have too many concerns in that regard.
His physicality also makes him a great tackler, whilst his ability in the air is also very good – as he showed in the Champions League with Roma last year.
Liverpool obviously play a very technical style, and so it’s important that defenders can still play football – and Manolas certainly can. He’s solid with the ball at his feet, and he’s more than capable of moving forward and finding a pass to the players ahead of him.
Moving for him, then, would make sense. Liverpool must build around van Dijk, and so bringing in a new partner for him should be priority number one. In Manolass, they’d find the perfect solution. He’s not cheap, but he’d be worth every penny.
