Peterborough United Football Club were officially formed on 17th May 1934, when a crowded meeting at the city’s now long demolished Angel Hotel decided to go ahead with the formation of a professional club to fill a void left by the collapse of Peterborough and Fletton United some two years earlier.
The club’s world famous ‘Posh’ nickname originates from player manager Pat Tirrel who said in the close season of 1921, that he was looking for ‘Posh players for a Posh team’. The Posh are a club with very little notable history; however, their recent success over the past two decades is memorable by many, and will be classed as the clubs best seasons. Their recent success began in 2007-08, the Posh achieved promotion from League Two after securing second place in a tight battle at the top. This was followed by back-to-back promotions the season after, again the Posh finished in second place to secure their spot up to the Championship for the first time in history.
This did not last long however, they were proven to not be ready for the higher level of football in the second flight of English football, and they were subsequently relegated from last position back down to League One. Despite falling short, they bounced straight back up and won promotion through the play-off finals. This time they lasted two seasons in the Championship, with 18th being their highest ever Football League finish.
Since relegation from the Championship in 2012-13, Peterborough United have been trying to win promotion back up to League One, narrowly missing out through the play-offs in 2013-14. Despite their efforts to regain their spot in the Championship, in 2013-14 the Posh achieved their first-ever major cup success in history.
