“I have probably resigned myself to Steven leaving but I knew that when there was no contract signed in the summer…there is a really good contract offer there for him but, to be fair, he has stood up for us this season and has done some really good things on the pitch.” David Moyes.
Is this the death knell on Steven Pienaar’s Everton career? With a whole host of clubs interested, is the South African about to cross Stanley Park??
It seems Pienaar is destined to leave. His contract negotiations have taken an age, and he seems intent on running it out to leave in the summer on a free transfer. Whilst enjoying a good relationship with many Evertonians, Pienaar (and his agent) have made noises implying he wants more from his career, namely to play in the Champions League regularly. That’s fair enough, so who’s interested?
Arsenal are said to be keen. Pienaar has attracted praise from Wenger and with his trickery and movement, could fit into Arsenal’s playing ethos if given the chance.
Spurs are also on red alert. Harry Redknapp has attempted to lure Pienaar from Goodison, possibly in a swap deal with Niko Kranjcar. This one could be the most likely.
Inter Milan are in the running. Benitez has long admired Pienaar with a close up view over the last few years. Now, he can offer European pedigree and the chance of major silverware.
Man City could outbid everyone. And offer European football.
Or, do the unthinkable?? Yes Pienaar could ‘do a Barmby’. No not be rubbish and amount to nothing, but move from Everton to Liverpool. He seems to like the Premiership and Merseyside (despite the odd robbery) and Liverpool could certainly use the creative spark in midfield.
He is going, but we’re not yet sure where. One thing is for sure though, if he plays like he did in the World Cup and on Sunday against Arsenal, he won’t get many takers…
