Portsmouth are keen to bring in experienced Sydney FC striker Adam Le Fondre, according to a report by Football League World.
A second successive failure to gain promotion from League One has left Pompey manager Kenny Jackett with the opportunity to rebuild his squad this summer and potentially bring in some new faces.
With clubs in England’s third tier now preparing for the 2020/21 season, Jackett could look to improve various areas of his team, including the attack.
Only Ronan Curtis, who is predominantly a left-winger, managed to get into double figures for Portsmouth during the 2019/20 league season, scoring 11 goals.
One player who has emerged as a potential summer arrival is former Reading striker Le Fondre, who currently plays for Sydney FC in the Australian A-League. The 33-year-old has been in excellent form down under, netting 18 goals in 21 games during the 2019/20 season.
Such good form has now seen a handful of teams show interest in acquiring his services, including Portsmouth’s League One rivals Sunderland.
Le Fondre, who has 162 English Football League goals throughout his career, could potentially return to England and provide a consistent supply of goals.
Whether he can continue to be as prolific in England at this stage of his career is another question, though, and Jackett needs to ensure that the 32-year-old would be a good fit at Fratton Park if Portsmouth are to address their shortage of reliable scorers.
