Portsmouth look set to miss out on Barnsley midfielder Cameron McGeehan with BBC Journalist Chris Wise saying that a ‘better option’ is on the table.
Kenny Jackett’s Pompey side missed out on promotion from League One after losing in the play-off semi-finals to Oxford United, a game which saw then-loanee McGeehan miss the fateful spot kick.
The 25-year-old arrived at Fratton Park in January on a short-term loan deal from Barnsley and he has now been linked with a permanent move back to the club in recent weeks.
McGeehan is said to be interested in leaving the Tykes and the Championship club are seemingly keen to sell as he has just one year left on his contract at Oakwell.
Portsmouth News reported last month that Fratton Park officials were preparing a summer move for the £360,000-valued midfielder.
However, BBC journalist Wise has now countered that with a tweet saying that McGeehan has had a better offer from another club.

Hampshire Live follow up Wise’s tweet and claim that McGeehan’s reported wages of £6,000 per week were a huge stumbling point in a potential move to Portsmouth.
Whilst McGeehan may have been a good summer addition, Portsmouth simply have to look after the pennies at the moment with Football League clubs feeling the financial pinch amid the global pandemic, and wages of £6,000 per week are hard to justify in League One in the current climate.
Jackett is going to have his work cut out this summer to find players for cheap and on low wages and that could ultimately have an impact on the club’s promotion chances next term if he is unable to strengthen his squad significantly.
