Christian Burgess has put out a heartfelt message to Portsmouth’s supporters following the club’s 4-0 loss against Southampton.
In the post on his personal Twitter page, the 27-year-old cited the incredible atmosphere at Fratton Park on Tuesday evening, while he also apologised for the result, saying that the supporters deserved more from the game:
Disappointed is an understatement. That hurt and I’m gutted for the fans who didn’t deserve that scoreline. Atmosphere/support was unreal and a privilege to play in front of! Sorry we couldn’t give you what you deserved!
— Christian Burgess (@Burgey44) September 25, 2019
However, many Pompey fans have insisted the defender has nothing to be sorry about, recognising that he gave his complete all for the cause during the match.
His statistics back this up, as the 27-year-old made 2 clearances, 2 interceptions, 2 tackles, blocked 1 shot, as well as winning 2 ground duels and 4 aerial duels, as per SofaScore.
The main hope for many fans is that the team will be able to take the level of effort that was on show into their League One matches to begin climbing the table.
A selection of Twitter reaction to the message, including posts from proud Portsmouth fans, can be seen below:
No issue with the effort you guys put in. Did us proud.

The scoreline flattered them greatly. Our confidence (or lack thereof) was the killer, we could have taken our chances against them in the first half, it would have been completely different. If we’d played them this time last season we would have nailed them. Never mind

You were fantastic burgey

Christian well said, just get the lads to re-produce the effort on Saturday and everyone try to limit the errors. The fans will reproduce more if given some hope.#PUP

Burgess mate you’ve got nothing to be sorry for.
Pompey fans will back any player that gives 100% in blue and whilst not everything came off it was clear you all played with pride yesterday.
I’d rather go down 4-0 fighting than playing defensive football. You should be proud

We ask for 100% and you gave it #WeGoAgain
