Arsenal fans on Twitter react to Carrick’s story about almost signing for the club

Michael Carrick is a Manchester United legend. The midfielder is lucky enough five-time Premier League winner, a Champions League winner and a former England international, however, in The Times, the 37-year-old has shared the story of how he came so close to signing for Arsenal before having the move fall through at the 11th hour.

In summer 2004, Michael Carrick would make the move from West Ham to Tottenham, where he spent just two years before leaving for the club he’s now synonymous with, Manchester United. However, prior to that move to Tottenham he came very close to signing for their North London rivals, Arsenal. He met Arsene Wenger and the Frenchman was very keen to get him on board, however, Cesc Fabregas soon scuppered the move.

According to the story, Carrick met with Wenger in the week before Arsenal’s Community Shield match against Manchester United and everything was in place for him to sign for the Premier League champions. However, Cesc Fabregas’ performance in the 3-1 win over Manchester United convinced Wenger that Carrick wasn’t needed at the club and the move fell through. Fortunately for Carrick, the disappointment didn’t ruin his career and he went on to be extremely successful, although a lot of Arsenal fans have been reacting to the story.

The Gunners are glad that Fabregas came through at the right time, although there’s no doubt that Carrick could have shone at Arsenal given the chance.
