Young attacking midfielder Anthony Gordon has been making waves in Everton’s academy since 2017, and now he is knocking on the door once again with a hugely prolific start to the season.
Gordon first started to turn heads at Goodison Park with a 2017/2018 season that drew up incredible numbers, ending the youth campaign with 14 goals and four assists in just 15 U18 appearances.
Of course, with statistics like that, it wasn’t long before his senior debut – a Europa League victory away to Apollon Limassol, where he came on for Kevin Mirallas during the last portion of the game.
Since then, Gordon hasn’t had a chance in the first team, admitting in an exclusive interview with the Liverpool Echo that he only got a taster, but now he could be knocking on the first-team door again after a noteworthy start to the season for the U23s in the Premier League 2 division.
The Englishman has notched five goals and two assists in eight appearances so far, as per Transfermarkt, bearing a resemblance to his stunning season that earned him a first-team cameo two years ago.
Speaking to the Echo, Gordon opened up over his chances of a Premier League debut and what manager Marco Silva told him.
“He doesn’t really speak about it,” Gordon said.
“He’ll give me things to work on and tell me when I’m doing right or wrong. He just wants me to progress and keep getting better at the things he thinks I should be getting better at and it’s all I want as well and I know my time will come if I keep doing that.
“I’m just trying to chip away, keep getting better and hopefully get closer and closer. And when my chance does come, I’ve got to take it, that’s up to me, I can’t depend on anyone else or the manager, that’s up to me. I’ve got to play well enough to stay there.”
Indeed, the 18-year-old’s impressive form has earned him training opportunities with the senior squad, but it could just be a matter of time before Silva takes the gamble and awards him minutes.
