If there’s one man who’s had a strange 2018 in football then it’s Dejan Lovren. The Croatian defender established himself as a starting centre-back for club and country, reached the Champions League and World Cup finals, found himself embroiled in a heated rivalry with Sergio Ramos and then ost his Liverpool place to Joe Gomez.

There’s no doubting that Dejan Lovren is a solid Premier League centre-back. He’s got all the traits of a good defender and he’s shown that he can be. However, he is not world class. When you considering defenders like Ramos, Raphael Varane, Mats Hummels and even Virgil van Dijk, Lovren simply isn’t of that calibre and he likely never will be. That hasn’t topped either him or the Liverpool fans from believing it though.
After reaching both the finals of the World Cup and Champions League, it seems Lovren has got a little bit too big for his boots with some of the things he’s been saying. Publicly clashing with one of the most successful defenders of the modern era in Ramos probably wasn’t the best move either, but it hasn’t stopped the Croatian from doing so. Now, though, it seems Lovren is only mentioned among the top names because he forces himself in there, even if plenty of Reds have been defending him via Twitter.

The Reds will always defend their own and Lovren is no different, even if he does come out with some questionable stuff sometimes.
