Chelsea’s season so far has gone exactly to plan, and it’s important that Maurizio Sarri’s men continue in that vein this weekend. They’re set to take on West Ham on Sunday, and with the Hammers seemingly picking up steam, it’s not a game that the Blues can afford to take lightly.
Indeed, it’s going to be one of Chelsea’s toughest games of the season so far, and with their 100% record on the line, a win is expected of Maurizio Sarri and his players.
It’s important that the Italian gets his team selection spot on, though, and given the strength that West Hm have in midfield, it’s key that the Blues match that. But how should Chelsea line-up in this area of the field?
Jorginho has been sensational for Chelsea this season, and nothing can take that away from him. However, he’s played a lot of football so far, and it’s important that the load is shared. West Ham are a tough opponent, and someone that knows this fixture could provide some much-needed experience in the midfield – and that’s why Cesc Fabregas would be a good choice for this role.
Fabregas has years of experience behind him, and he looked good over the course of the summer in Maurizio Sarri’s system. Like Jorginho, he’ll be able to put forward simple passes and just help the game tick along smoothly. This will likely be his role this season, as it suits him well, and this is the perfect game to give him a chance in.
Alongside him, it’s tough to look past N’Golo Kante. He’s played a lot of football this season, but he’s simply too important to leave out. The Frenchman offers brilliant box-to-box capabilities, and his passing has come on leaps and bounds this season. Truthfully, he’s the complete midfielder – and he’s even more indispensable than Jorginho for Chelsea.
In the more advanced role, a spot for Ross Barkley makes sense. Mateo Kovacic has looked okay during his time in the first team, but he’s got a minor injury that kept him out of Europa League duty, and so perhaps Sarri shouldn’t rush him back. Barkley looked good during pre-season, and he’s the perfect player to add some energy and quality into the Chelsea midfield and subsequently the attack.
Maurizio Sarri hasn’t rotated much this season, but it’s important that he gives everyone a chance. Barkley certainly deserves one.
