Newcastle United feel that a deal to sign PSG superstar Neymar is ‘unlikely’ due to the financial package that it would take.
The Lowdown: Talks held
It was reported earlier this month that intermediaries of Neymar have spoken to Newcastle, as well as Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United, informing them of his interest to move to the Premier League and his potential availability.
PSG are open to a sale, but in no rush due to his contract not expiring until 2025.
The Latest: Deal ‘unlikely’
As per Football Insider, the St. James’ Park outfit feel that a deal to sign Neymar this summer is ‘unlikely’, due to the financial package it would take.
A transfer fee of £70-80m could be required to bring him to the North East, while he would also have to take a pay cut on his almost £1m-per-week wages.
The Verdict: Too expensive
As great of a player that Neymar is, as talkSPORT pundit Danny Murphy claims that he is a ‘special talent’ who is ‘up there’ with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, the whole financial package seems too much for the Magpies, who already signed winger Anthony Gordon in the January transfer window.
The 31-year-old has so much experience at the highest level, becoming Brazil’s joint all-time record scorer with the legendary Pele after netting his 77th at the World Cup in Qatar, while at club level, he has won numerous league titles with Barcelona and PSG, and the Champions League with the former.
However, at his age, Neymar could be on the decline in the next few years, and so the Magpies should be looking at younger targets and perhaps even strengthening other areas of the pitch first.
