Pat Nevin: Chelsea ‘needed’ to sign these 2 players over the summer

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern were eventually pretty pleased with their side’s summer business…

It was a slow summer for the Blues, with a lot of business being conducted on deadline day – much to the frustration of supporters.

However, the two last-minute captures were good ones, with both Danny Drinkwater and Davide Zappacosta moving to Stamford Bridge and plugging important gaps in the squad.

Though not massive names, it’s clear that they will be key to Chelsea’s success this season, and pundit Pat Nevin has argued that their acquisitions will be massive in the context of the season.

Writing for the official Chelsea website, Nevin said that Chelsea ‘needed’ to sign both players in order to have enough squad depth to make it through the season. Noting the need for more than 1 wing-back in each position, and more depth than just Kante, Bakayoko and Fabregas, it’s clear that he’s absolutely right.

Chelsea will be competing on a number of fronts this season, and before the final day, they were only ever one injury away from a major problem.

The likes of Kante and Moses were one of a kind in the Chelsea first team, and whilst Conte won’t want to lose them now, it wouldn’t be a disaster if either of the duo happens to suffer a short-term injury blow.

The squad is still limited, but the essential final signings have made life much easier.

Landlord’s Verdict

Not much is known about Zappacosta, but his versatility on the flanks is sure to make him a favourite under Antonio Conte. Likewise, Danny Drinkwater is an experienced Premier League performer, and he’ll undoubtedly come in handy as the season progresses.

It remains to be seen just how well Chelsea will do this season, but there can be no doubt about it: their chances have gone way up after a stellar deadline day.
