Rangers captain James Tavernier led the team out for the first time two years ago this week, with the club’s official Twitter channel @RangersFC marking the occasion on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old was named as ‘Gers captain for the Scottish Cup tie against Ayr on February 11th, 2018, a game in which Graeme Murty’s side recovered from going a goal down early on to run out 6-1 winners, with Alfredo Morelos and Josh Windass each scoring twice on a bitterly cold, snow-affected afternoon at Somerset Park (as per BBC).
Tavernier almost claimed an assist on his first outing as Rangers captain, his cross for Windass being headed against the bar by the now-Sheffield Wednesday loanee. The right-back would be given the armband a few more times in the 2017/18 season before being appointed permanent club captain by Steven Gerrard in July 2018. The skipper subsequently missed only one Premiership game last season and had been ever-present in the league this term prior to his recent appendix operation.
