Borna Barisic has been tipped to stay at Rangers by Noel Whelan amid the transfer talk suggesting that West Ham United want to sign him.
As per Football Insider, David Moyes’ team are reportedly in the market for a new player in the left-back role after Arthur Masuaku underwent surgery to his knee earlier this month and as such, is expected to be out for an extended period of time.
Should Rangers keep Barisic?
It means that the Hammers now only have Aaron Cresswell as the only senior option in the position and they are now potentially looking at a move for Barisic next month to provide some cover, or competition, for the Englishman.
However, Whelan has since told Football Insider that he thinks that the Croatia international will end up staying at Ibrox in what would be a big boost to Steven Gerrard and the Gers:
“He will not be letting him go,” the former Leeds United striker exclusively told the news outlet.
“Absolutely no chance. Not in this window, not in January.
“They’re looking to go and win the league and he’s a crucial part of that team and why they’ve been successful this season.
“I would be very, very surprised to see anybody leaving that first-team squad at Rangers when they’re on this kind of run and this kind of form. They’re a settled side, a consistent side and one that is absolutely destroying the league at the moment.
“No, would be my answer to that right now.
“Yes, maybe in the summertime there might be talks that gives them the opportunity and time to get in a replacement from the money they get in from him.
“Right now, the January window is not the window you can get a replacement without having to fork out loads of money.
“It’ll be flattering to the player, flattering to the club, but if talks are going to happen it has to be next summer.
“Gerrard wants a settled side, he wants to keep that nucleus that has done so well this season.
“So absolutely no chance will Gerrard be letting any players go.”
Rangers need to keep Barisic
Rangers surely need to do everything in their power to keep Barisic if they want to secure the Scottish Premiership title and go as far in the UEFA Europa League as possible for the rest of the 2020/21 term.
‘Terrific’ on his day, the 28 year-old already has no fewer than 10 assists to add to two goals in 28 games in all competitions so far in the 2020/21 term (Transfermarkt), and given just how much Gerrard has played him, the former Liverpool and England legend will surely not want to let him go.
