Fabrizio Romano has revealed on Twitter that Glasgow Rangers were 'so close' to signing Jakub Jankto during the summer transfer window.

Gers wanted Jankto

Jankto, who currently plays for Serie A outfit Sampdoria, was linked with a move to Ibrox towards the end of the summer. However, no deal ended up going through.

Now, after being asked on Twitter, Romano has revealed the Gers were close to the 24-year-old. He said:

"so close! Rangers and Getafe asked for him".

Statement from Gerrard

Trying to sign the 24-year-old Czech Republic international shows exactly where Steven Gerrard wants to take Rangers. Jankto has been linked with Juventus in the past, and has 27 caps for his country. Valued at £8.55m (Transfermarkt), he would likely command a large fee - to see that the 54-time Scottish champions were even in with a shout shows how far they have come.

Gerrard eventually brought in Bongani Zungu on deadline day, perhaps filling the midfield slot he had earmarked for Jankto. With two goals in seven games so far this season for his current club, Jankto still looks an interesting option. It remains to be seen whether the Gers make another move for the former Udinese man in the future.
