Rangers: Gerrard confirms prolonged Nikola Katic absence

Steven Gerrard has revealed that Glasgow Rangers defender Nikola Katic will not be available between now and the rest of the season.

Katic out for the season

Croatian defender Katic suffered a serious injury in pre-season training (BBC), and he has not played a minute of football so far this term as a result (Transfermarkt).

There had been hope that Katic would be available in January, but ahead of the Gers’ clash with St. Johnstone, Gerrard has revealed the bombshell news that he will now be without the £1.44m-valued (Transfermarkt) until the start of the next campaign.

Hold the fort

Last season, Katic was an important player for Gerrard at the heart of his defence, with him appearing 19 times in the Premiership before the campaign was brought to a premature close due to the coronavirus pandemic. As such, when the news of his injury issue first broke, many at Ibrox may have been worried about how the team would cope without him.

However, in the end, there have been no issues. Connor Goldson, Filip Helander and Leon Balogun have all been fantastic, and the numbers back that up – after 26 league games, the 54-time Scottish champions have conceded on just seven occasions. The arrival of Jack Simpson on a permanent basis from Bournemouth also provides Gerrard with another option if the injury bug was to strike again.

Such has been the level of the performances from the defenders, Katic may even struggle to find his way back into the team.
